The creation of the lake was originally an idea of Nikolaos Plastiras, former prime minister of Greece, in 1925 but the project was actually completed in 1959 thus creating one of the largest artificial lakes in Greece covering an area of 14 km in length, 4 km maximum width and reaching the maximum depth of 60 meters (holding up to 400.000.000 m3 of water).

A unique ecosystem, hosting a variety of birds, fishes and animals developed in and around the lake throughout the passage of the years. The region presents a great variety of unspoilt breathtaking landscapes scattered with beautiful picturesque villages and is ideal for activities such as trekking, hunting, mountain climbing, fishing, horse riding, skiing and many more. Exploring the endless paths in the surrounding forests is definitely one of the most regenerating activities visitors can experience.

The simplicity and serenity of life around the lake is beyond description and the fusion of tradition and authenticity all around sets the area as an ideal destination for a short holiday.

There are many villages around the lake but Neochori, which is located at the foot of the mountain surrounded by luscious vegetation, offers the most facilities to visitors.
